The soundtrack to "Bad Boys II" added to the film's box-office success as it entered the Billboard 200 pop album chart at No. 1 on Wednesday.
The Bad Boy/Universal album sold 324,000 copies in the United States its first week in stores, according to Nielsen SoundScan, besting early predictions from retailers that pegged debut sales of the album in the 250,000-unit range.
The soundtrack, featuring Jay-Z, P. Diddy, Justin Timberlake and Beyonce, among others, leads four new releases in the top-10.
Entering the pop album chart at No. 2 is rapper Chingy's debut Capitol effort, "Jackpot." Buoyed by the massive success of first single "Right Thurr," the rapper sold 157,000 copies to shoot to the upper echelon of the chart. "Right Thurr" peaked at No. 3 on Billboard's Hot 100 and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks tally.
Meanwhile, Beyonce's No. 1 single "Crazy in Love" featuring Jay-Z kept interest in her Columbia debut solo album, "Dangerously in Love," on par with the previous week's sales. The album slips one slot to No. 3, with sales off a minuscule 1 percent to 130,400 copies.
Country duo Brooks & Dunn roped a No. 4 debut for "Red Dirt Road." The Arista album sold 114,000 copes, the act's best sales week since 1997. The pair's last non-holiday-themed release, 2001's "Steers & Stripes," also arrived at No. 4, and has sold 1.2 million units to date.
Last week's No. 1, Ashanti's "Chapter II" (Murder Inc./Def Jam), slipped to No. 5 on a 20 percent drop to sales of 108,000 copies. Releases from Evanescence and 50 Cent each saw sales gains of about 1 percent, but they lost ground on the chart. Evanescence's "Fallen" (Wind-Up) is down three spots to No. 6with 73,000 copies, while 50 Cent's "Get Rich or Die Tryin"' (Shady/Interscope) dips two notches to No. 7 with 67,000 units.
Luther Vandross' "Dance With My Father" (J Records) falls from No. 4 to 8 after suffering a 7 percent sales dip to 64,000 units. Norah Jones' "Come Away With Me" (Blue Note/Capitol) falls one notch to No. 9 while sales of that set held steady at 61,000 copies.
Rounding out the top-10, country singer/songwriter Pat Green scored the highest debut of his career with "Wave on Wave" (Republic). The album bowed at No. 10 with first-week sales of 53,000 copies. His 2001 set, "Three Days," entered the chart at No. 86 and has sold 225,000 copies to date.
The latest from hip-hop artist Da Brat, "Limelite, Luv & Niteclubz" (Arista), arrived at No. 17 on sales of 39,000 copies, but that's far short of the first-week numbers for her 2000 effort, "Unrestricted." The latter entered at No. 4 after moving 143,000 copies in its first week, and has sold 907,000 to date.
Other debuts included rapper Keith Murray's "He's Keith Murray" (Def Jam) at No. 40 and Macy Gray's "The Trouble With Being Myself" (Epic) at No. 44.
For Murray, it's a one-notch slip from his 1998 album "It's a Beautiful Thing," which bowed at No. 39. In Gray's case, the entry is a long way off from the No. 11 arrival of her 2001 set, "The Id."
