Mardi Gras revelers offered other venues
No More Bull---it Downtown
Source: The Seattle Times
Author: Stuart Eskenazi
A promoter of last year''s Mardi Gras in Pioneer Square is putting the finishing touches on a marketing effort designed to draw this year''s revelers away from downtown and disperse them across several neighborhoods.
Kurt Geibel, owner of
3Dhospitality.com
, said he hopes his Carnival 2002 brainchild will steer people toward 13 bars across the Seattle area that have signed on as official venues.
Mardi Gras week begins Wednesday and continues for seven days, climaxing with Fat Tuesday. Pioneer Square bars are taking a year off from their quarter-century tradition of sponsoring a Fat Tuesday festival.
Last year''s event turned catastrophic with street riots that left 20-year-old Kristopher Kime dead and more than 70 others injured.
While several Pioneer Square bar owners are planning Mardi Gras-themed events, a group of them has agreed to not advertise or promote a joint event.
Geibel is picking up the slack, advertising Carnival 2002 in The Stranger and Seattle Gay News and on his Web site,
www.3Dhospitality.com
. The 13 participating bars and clubs are on the Eastside and in Seattle''s University District, Queen Anne, Belltown and Capitol Hill.
One of the participating bars is Tommy''s Nightclub & Grill in the University District, which caters primarily to University of Washington students.
