USHER ON PERMANENT SICK LEAVE FROM ‘CHICAGO’
Nasty case of strep throat forces actor to remain home

Usher’s brilliant Broadway run in “Chicago” has ended sooner than expected due to an “extreme case of strep throat.”
Usher’s “mom-ager” Jonnetta Patton issued a statement Wednesday saying that her son “fell ill last Friday and his condition became progressively worse, so under strict orders from his doctors, Usher has been instructed not to perform.”
The five-time Grammy winner has been absent from the musical revival since Oct. 6 and had initially been expected to return on Oct. 9, which would’ve given Usher five more days of performances before his extended run was to end on Oct. 14.
“He is really saddened that he cannot close out his last week in Chicago with a bang,” Patton said. “Usher has had an amazing time on Broadway and loved every minute of performing on stage with the entire cast of Chicago. He expresses his sincere apologies to all of his fans who purchased tickets to see him in Chicago this final week and appreciate all of their love and support. He is thankful to the producers, the entire cast and production crew of Chicago.”
Christopher McDonald will succeed Usher as slick lawyer Billy Flynn beginning Oct. 15. Huey Lewis begins his second stint as Flynn Nov. 20.
