Busted Ecstasy ring called 'tip of iceberg'

It began early one morning in October 1999, when a young sailor named Anthony Paul Johnson, high on the club-drug Ecstasy, inexplicably dove out of the car in which he was riding and landed head-first on the pavement.

Johnson, a Californian who had been dancing away his shore leave at a Seattle nightclub that night, died of massive head injuries.

More than two years later, the routine investigation into the death of the 21-year-old man has snowballed into a huge investigation by droves of federal agents and local police who infiltrated Seattle's club scene and rounded up what authorities say is one of the area's largest Ecstasy rings on record.

Federal prosecutors and local health leaders joined investigators yesterday as they detailed the work that last week ended in the arrests and indictments of 30 people, including the owner of a new Chinatown International District nightclub who is alleged to be the ringleader.
